7 Things to Know Before Getting All-on-4 Dental Implants
If you’ve been researching All-on-4, All-on-X, full-mouth dental implants, or teeth in a day, you’ve probably seen the incredible before-and-after transformations.
But what many patients don’t realize is that getting a new smile involves more than just one appointment.
What do temporary implant teeth feel like? Will your speech change? How long does healing take? And will your final teeth look exactly like the ones you leave with on surgery day?
In this video, Dr. Kris Bano of Centreville Family Dentistry and Implant Center explains seven things every patient should understand before getting full-mouth dental implants.

1. Surgery Day Is More Than a Quick Appointment
All-on-4 or All-on-X surgery typically involves several steps, including removing unhealthy teeth when necessary, preparing the jawbone, placing implants, and attaching temporary teeth.
Patients should generally expect to spend several hours at the office, sometimes half a day or longer.
Even if you leave with a new smile, remember that you’ve undergone surgery. Rest and recovery are important.
2. Temporary Implant Teeth May Feel Different
One of the biggest surprises for patients is how their temporary teeth feel immediately after surgery.
These temporary restorations, sometimes called healing teeth, are designed to protect and connect the implants during recovery.
They may feel thicker or bulkier than natural teeth, especially behind the front teeth.
Fortunately, temporary teeth are not your final restoration. Final zirconia teeth can often be designed with a slimmer, more natural-feeling profile.
3. Your Speech May Change Temporarily
When the shape and position of your teeth change, your tongue needs time to adjust.
Some patients notice a slight lisp or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds immediately after receiving their temporary teeth.
This usually improves as your tongue adapts. Occasionally, adjustments to the temporary teeth may also help improve speech.
4. Your Temporary Smile Is Not Your Final Smile
The teeth you receive on surgery day are typically temporary.
While they’re designed to look good and function during healing, they also allow you and your dentist to evaluate your smile before the final teeth are made.
You may discover that you’d prefer slightly longer teeth, a different shape, or changes to your smile’s appearance.
These details can help guide the design of your final restoration.
5. You’ll Need to Be Careful During Healing
Even though your temporary teeth are fixed in place, the implants underneath still need time to integrate with your jawbone.
Healing commonly takes several months, depending on the patient.
During this period, a softer diet is typically recommended to avoid placing excessive force on the implants.
Hard, crunchy, or sticky foods may need to be avoided until your dentist confirms that healing has progressed appropriately.
Temporary teeth can also chip or break, which is another reason following postoperative instructions is important.
6. Not Everyone Gets the Same Number of Teeth
Every patient’s anatomy is different.
The number and position of implants, available jawbone, bite relationship, and other anatomical factors influence how the final teeth are designed.
Some patients may receive a different number of replacement teeth than others.
The goal is to create a stable, functional smile that fits your individual anatomy rather than using the same design for everyone.
7. Your Final Teeth Are Designed for You
One of the most important parts of full-mouth implant treatment is designing your final smile.
Your dentist considers your facial proportions, bite, jaw position, tooth shape, smile line, and personal preferences.
You can bring photos of smiles you like, but the final restoration should be customized to your face and mouth rather than copied from someone else.
At Centreville Family Dentistry and Implant Center, final implant restorations are carefully planned to balance appearance, comfort, function, and long-term maintenance.
Does Teeth in a Day Mean Everything Is Finished in One Day?
Not exactly.
In many cases, teeth in a day means that unhealthy teeth can be removed, implants placed, and fixed temporary teeth delivered during the same appointment.
However, the implants still need time to heal before the final teeth are completed.
This healing period also allows your dentist to evaluate your bite, speech, comfort, and smile design before creating the final restoration.
Understanding this process helps patients know what to expect throughout their treatment.
