Are you or your child tongue-tied?

What is tongue/lip tie?

In some cases, a tongue tie can be a concern. An attachment under the tongue (a frenum) is a normal oral structure. However, a baby can have trouble feeding properly if the attachment is too tight or too far forward.

If it is determined that your baby has restrictive tissues, a CO2 laser can quickly and safely release the restrictions (a frenectomy) right in our dental office without the need for sedation. A functional evaluation of your infant’s mouth is critical to proper diagnosis and treatment. We never diagnose on appearance alone.

Infant Tongue Tie

  • The problem: Tongue tie is a condition where the strip of skin under the tongue restricts movement. It’s a concern in infants because it can significantly impact feeding and jaw development. Early identification and intervention are crucial.
  • The solution: A laser frenectomy is a swift, comfortable solution for tongue or lip tie issues in infants and young children. It is a quick, virtually painless experience, with minimal bleeding, and does not require anesthesia. Recovery is fast, and the risk of complications very low.

With a laser frenectomy, your infant or child will have added tongue mobility, be able to nurse properly and have fewer issues related to digestion, like colic. Erupting teeth will come in straighter, with less crowding or misalignment, benefiting your child’s oral and overall health.

At Centreville Family Dentistry, we take the time to ensure that your feeding issues are addressed comprehensively. It is important to note that not all feeding issues are caused by tethered oral issues, nor is a surgical release the only solution.  We work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as chiropractors, speech-language pathologists, and occupational therapists, to ensure your family receives the proper support to help your baby thrive.
