Am I A Good Candidate for Dental Implants? What You Need to Know
If you’ve been considering dental implants, you may have wondered whether you’re actually a good candidate.
Maybe you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone. Perhaps you have diabetes, smoke, take certain medications, or believe you’re simply too old for dental implants.
The truth is, being a good candidate for dental implants isn’t always a simple yes or no answer.
In this video, Dr. Kris Bano of Centreville Family Dentistry and Implant Center explains the factors that determine dental implant eligibility and why some patients may have more options than they realize.

1. Your Overall Health Matters
Dental implants are placed into the jawbone, where the surrounding bone gradually bonds with the implant through a process called osseointegration.
Certain health conditions can affect this healing process, but they don’t automatically disqualify you.
For example, patients with well-controlled diabetes can often successfully receive dental implants. However, uncontrolled blood sugar can increase the risk of infection, delayed healing, and implant complications.
Your dentist should review your medical history, medications, and overall health before recommending treatment.
2. Smoking and Medications Can Affect Healing
Smoking and nicotine use can interfere with healing and increase the risk of dental implant failure.
Certain medications, including some used for osteoporosis, cancer treatment, or immune system conditions, can also affect the surgical process or bone healing.
However, taking medications or smoking doesn’t always mean implants are impossible.
Some patients may need additional precautions, medical clearance, changes to their treatment plan, or more healing time.
3. What If You Don’t Have Enough Bone for Dental Implants?
One of the most common concerns patients have is whether they have enough jawbone to support implants.
When teeth are missing for extended periods, the jawbone can gradually shrink. But bone loss doesn’t automatically mean you cannot receive dental implants.
Depending on your situation, options may include:
- Bone grafting to rebuild lost bone
- Adjusting implant size or positioning
- Using angled implants to maximize available bone
- Considering full-arch solutions such as All-on-4 or All-on-X
At Centreville Family Dentistry and Implant Center, we use 3D CBCT imaging to evaluate bone height, width, and surrounding anatomy before developing a treatment plan.
Even if you were previously told you’re not a candidate, a new evaluation may reveal additional options.
4. Your Gum Health and Bite Are Important
Dental implants cannot develop cavities, but the surrounding gums and bone can still develop inflammation or infection.
Active gum disease should be evaluated and appropriately managed before implant placement.
Your bite also matters. Patients who grind or clench their teeth may place additional forces on implants, potentially affecting their long-term stability.
That’s why a proper dental implant evaluation considers more than just the missing tooth. It looks at your entire mouth, including your gums, remaining teeth, jawbone, and bite.
5. Are You Too Old for Dental Implants?
Many patients assume they’ve missed their opportunity for dental implants because of their age.
However, patients in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s may still be candidates.
Age alone is usually not the deciding factor. Overall health, bone availability, healing ability, and personal goals are generally more important.
Younger patients, on the other hand, typically need to wait until jaw growth is complete before receiving implants.
What Makes Someone a Good Dental Implant Candidate?
Generally, a good candidate is someone who:
- Is healthy enough to undergo the procedure
- Has medical conditions that are appropriately managed
- Has sufficient bone or is eligible for additional treatment
- Has healthy gums or is willing to address existing gum disease
- Understands the healing process and treatment expectations
- Is committed to proper oral hygiene and ongoing maintenance
Not everyone will qualify for every type of implant treatment, but many patients have more options than they initially expect.
